Endowed pride award will empower student leaders for generations

January 16, 2026

Future generations of 2SLGBTQIA+ student leaders will now be able to receive the support they need as they work to create safer spaces, challenge inequities, and inspire change, thanks to the newly endowed Pride Student Leadership & Advocacy Award.

Launched in the summer of 2025, the award celebrates and uplifts students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, advocacy, and a deep commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and dignity for Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and other gender- and sexually-diverse (2SLGBTQIA+) communities.

At a time when equity-deserving groups face growing challenges, 2SLGBTQIA+ students are at the forefront of driving change. They are powerful advocates, educators, and changemakers, yet their work is often unpaid, emotionally demanding, and too frequently unrecognized. This award changes that.

With the endowment in place, SFU will be able to grant at least one annual award of $2,000 to a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing who has shown exceptional leadership and advocacy for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities on campus or in the broader community.

“This endowment is a powerful affirmation of the courage, leadership, and resilience of 2SLGBTQIA+ students,” says Erin Morantz, Vice-President Advancement and Alumni Engagement. “By investing in these changemakers, we are helping to create a future where equity and inclusion are not just ideals, but a part of lived realities at SFU and beyond.”

With generous support from donors and alumni who share SFU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, this endowed award ensures student advocates can continue building safer spaces, cultivating allyship, and driving systemic change—work that strengthens our community and shapes a brighter future for all.
