SFU Frontier Hub for Agritech Research and Methodology

Help grow the future of Agritech innovation

Simon Fraser University is launching the SFU Frontier Hub for Agritech Research and Methodology (SFU-FARM), known as SFU-FARM: a new applied research-innovation hub designed to accelerate the R&D, testing and adoption of next-generation agritech solutions.

Rather than serving as a traditional agriculture site, SFU-FARM will provide a real-world testbed where researchers, students, start-ups, industry partners and community collaborators can pilot emerging technologies that support more resilient, efficient and sustainable food systems.

The hub will focus on technology development, demonstration and validation across areas such as sensors, automation, data-driven decision-making, controlled-environment systems, climate adaptation, resource efficiency and smart farming tools.

By giving to the SFU-FARM Fund, you will help create a collaborative platform where research, education and industry come together to address urgent challenges in food security, climate resilience, and agricultural innovation.

BE BOLD by seeding the future of sustainable farming

SFU-FARM will help accelerate research, technology development and real-world testing in Agritech, helping move promising ideas from the lab into practical use.

Located approximately 30 minutes from SFU’s Surrey campus, SFU-FARM will bring together researchers, students, industry partners and community leaders to develop, test and refine future-ready agritech solutions.

Through a partnership with the City of Surrey, the project will be based on 10 acres of Agricultural Land Reserve land in south Cloverdale through a long-term, low-cost lease, along with municipal support for zoning, permitting and regulatory processes

A future-ready research and education facility

SFU-FARM will feature two primary areas designed to support both applied research and student learning.

Open Field Research Area

A dedicated outdoor space for crop testing and community-style research plots where researchers can evaluate irrigation systems, harvesting technologies, drones, robotics and automated sensing tools in real-world conditions.

Educational and Research Building

A multi-level facility featuring:

  • Ground-floor classrooms and outreach spaces
  • Indoor farms and phenotyping facilities
  • Automated tissue culture and advanced research areas
  • Rooftop drone testing infrastructure

Together, these facilities will support hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of future-ready farming solutions.

Innovation in the field

SFU-FARM will serve as a hands-on research and education and demonstration hub where new technologies and approaches can be tested, refined and validated in real-world conditions. Research activities at SFU-FARM will focus on high-impact areas including:

  • Innovative irrigation and harvesting technologies
  • Genetic engineering of high-value Canadian crops
  • Integration of sustainable agriculture with modern technologies and Indigenous methodologies
  • Drones, robotics and automated sensing systems for agricultural applications
  • Machine learning and digital twin technologies for plant pathogen detection and crop optimization

Give to the FARM Fund

Double your impact

The President’s Office will support the SFU-FARM Seed Fund Campaign through a $25,000 matching initiative for donor contributions. Your gift will help launch a transformative research and education hub dedicated to sustainable agriculture, food security and climate resilience.
