Dr. Lorne Davies became the first athletic director and football coach at SFU in 1965, and was behind some of the most forward-thinking measures in Canadian university sport.

Davies built a trailblazing program of 18 varsity sports by recruiting full-time coaches, promoting female participation in university sport, awarding athletic scholarships to student-athletes and taking SFU on the path to competing in the United States - offering our athletes access to the American athletic experience with a Canadian education.

The Lorne Davies Athletic Fund supports:

• W. Lorne Davies Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards. These awards are granted annually to the outstanding male and the outstanding female varsity student athlete of the year.
• W. Lorne Davies Athletic Excellence Awards. A minimum of four awards are granted annually to the top student-athlete based on demonstrated athletic excellence from each of the following SFU varsity sports: football, swimming, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.
