The Dr. Brian Burtch Graduate Award in Criminology was established in 2015 with a generous gift from Dr. Brian Burtch, past Professor for the School of Criminology at SFU. The award recognizes and provides funding to outstanding graduate students in the master's degree program in the School of Criminology who have demonstrated positive contributions to the SFU or external community, including university engagement, leadership, volunteerism and/or teamwork.

Bursaries, scholarships and teaching appointments were valuable aids during Brian's time in school where he completed his B.A. in Sociology at Queen's University in 1972, his M.A. in Criminology at the University of Toronto in 1978, and his Ph.D in Sociology at the University of British Columbia. Brian began teaching as a sessional in SFU's School of Criminology in 1980, with a full-time appointment in Criminology in 1985. Brian knows firsthand the difference it makes to a student when they receive funding support during their time at university and is committed to paying it forward with the Dr. Brian Burtch Graduate Award in Criminology.
