The Bruce Brenton Undergraduate Award was established in 2015 with a generous gift and commitment from Bruce's daughter Natalie and her husband Michael in honour of Bruce's impending retirement from a long career at SFU. The award recognizes and provides funding to undergraduate students who have successfully completed the SFU Back on Track Program and are now in good academic standing with preference offered to students who are Indigenous and/or single parents.
Bruce Brenton was an SFU employee for over 25 years and was one of the first in his family to attend university where he studied in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences from 1967 to 1970. He never completed his degree, deciding instead to become a pipefitter and plumber in order to support his family, but he encouraged his daughters to attend SFU and his eldest became the first in the Brenton family to complete a university degree thanks in large part to his encouragement and assistance.
