Supporting Threatened Scholars and Students

During times of war and international conflict, thousands of young children, youth and scholars are forced to flee their home countries. Today, there is an urgent need to provide sanctuary and assistance to scholars and students facing immediate threats of violence and/or political repression. Your generous support will ensure those who face wrongful imprisonment, prosecution and expulsion are provided a safe space at SFU to continue their important work.

Protecting the Scholars Around the World

Events like the August 2021 resurgence of Taliban power in Afghanistan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the challenges being faced in Iran following the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini are but a few examples of situations that highlight a critical call for the international community to step up.

Citizens in these countries and elsewhere face relentless fear and uncertainty in the face of war and international conflict. Due to the current threat to students and scholars—who have no way of safely continuing their education and research—the demand for sanctuary has dramatically increased. By making a donation today you can join with the SFU community to provide critical support to  students and colleagues at risk.

Donation Impact

A donation to support threatened scholars and students will cover salary, benefits, professional development, research costs, books and conferences for scholars and tuition, books, living costs, international travel, and settlement expenses for vulnerable students. It also prepares us to provide support in other critical ways—from mental health and health care services, to relocation costs and support for family members. We strive to keep administrative costs low so that your gift goes directly towards supporting our scholars and students, including helping them settle into their new lives at SFU and in Canada.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 for each scholar's one-year term at SFU to meet the complex needs of their situation and a minimum of $50,000 for each individual student at risk. Please make your donation today, and help ensure this transformative program is available to our colleagues in need of support.
