As SFU President Joy Johnson shares in What’s Next: the SFU Strategy, our university is ready to meet this critical moment, and bring our vision to life by progressing four main priorities for the university:
- Transforming the SFU experience
- Upholding truth and Reconciliation
- Engaging in global challenges
- Making a difference for B.C.
Each of these four areas extends activities already underway at the university and reflects our deep commitment to progress through teaching, research and engagement with the world.
Transforming the SFU experience means putting students at the heart of all we do. As a place known for experiential and innovative learning, we must focus on the well-being of students and prepare them to be nimble in this uncertain and complex world. We will break barriers, reduce biases, and create systems that promote student success, improve campus vibrancy, and create space for everyone to do their best work.
Upholding truth and Reconciliation is critical for SFU to respectfully work and partner with the host Indigenous Nations on which our campuses are located. We take responsibility to understand the truth and stories of the unceded traditional territories of Indigenous peoples. In addition to continuing to Indigenize our curriculum, we will increase support, mentorship, and recruitment of Indigenous students, strengthen Indigenous faculty and staff retention, and further strive to Indigenize hiring practices.
Engaging in global challenges is what leading researchers and changemakers at SFU have always done. We’ll continue to focus on developing entrepreneurship and an innovative global mindset in our students, working with peers and colleagues both locally and globally. We are strengthened by our shared commitment to the sustainable development goals and will continue to address humanity’s most complex problems and effect positive outcomes.
Making a difference for B.C. has always propelled our work at SFU. Attracting learners from around the world, many of our alumni remain in B.C. after graduation, contributing their talents and enriching society. Reinforcing this role as the university for B.C., we are building a socially accountable medical school—aiming to graduate physicians equipped to provide team-based health care and serve B.C.’s diverse communities. We will also expand experiential education, lifelong learning, and credential models, and continue to facilitate evidence-informed public dialogue to encourage pluralism and shared problem-solving.
