Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
At the intersection of media, art, culture and technology, the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology is situated precisely where some of the most important developments of our time are being uncovered. The faculty comprises three schools and two professional programs: School of Communication, School of Interactive Arts and Technology, School for the Contemporary Arts, Publishing Programs, and Master of Digital Media. FCAT’s vibrancy lies in the sheer range and diversity of its departments; its unity lies in each of these departments' dedication to rigorous and imaginative intellectual inquiry, the highest academic standards and the continuous expansion of knowledge through research, teaching and creative production.
Faculty members have research strengths in cultural policy and practice, media analysis, the artistic practice and social impact of new media, film, dance, music composition, visual art, interactive systems, design and visual analytics.
Selected highlights
SCA marked its 50th anniversary in 2025 while the School for Communication celebrated its 50th in 2023, FCAT also houses the World Soundscape Project and Sonic Research Studio, which have pioneered research in the fields of critical sound studies, acoustic ecology, and urban soundscape design.
FCAT’s student body is highly engaged, with students leading on innovative initiatives like SIAT’s Eunoia UX Hackathon, public art exhibitions and performances from the School for the Contemporary Arts, and more.
Esteemed members of our faculty include researchers like Dr. Wendy Chun, Canada 150 Research Chair in New Media, who integrates arts and humanities with data sciences; Dr. Karmen Crey, Sto:lo and a member of the Cheam Band, whose research on Indigenous film, video, and digital media in Canada, focuses on media institutions and Indigenous futurism; and Dr. Steve DiPaola, a SIAT professor who focuses on computational systems and AI-based creativity and is a part of SFU’s AI Strategy Committee.
Notable FCAT alumni include accomplished people like acclaimed B.C. journalist Simi Sara (BA, Communication 2017), broadcaster Nira Arora (BA, Communication 2000) and award-winning filmmaker, Kathleen Hepburn (BFA, 2007).
