Bruce and Lis Welch embody the spirit of philanthropy at SFU, giving selflessly of both time and resources to strengthen not only our university but also the extended community throughout the Lower Mainland. From Bruce’s distinguished role as an esteemed Convocation Founder at SFU in 1964, to Lis’ tireless leadership as Chair on not just one, but three Anniversary fundraising campaigns; from their commitment to the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, to an array of university endowments and gifts, the Welches have been an admirable force, blending business, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and friendship seamlessly over the years.
United in their decisions to support various organizations that elevate women and children’s issues, Bruce and Lis have contributed generously to YWCA Metro Vancouver for decades. Lis assumed a more public facing role for the couple’s shared vision of philanthropy; her numerous board responsibilities comprise founding board member at the Minerva Foundation for BC Women, long-term commitments to the YWCA Metro Vancouver, as well as board positions at Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Opera Foundation and Granville Island Trust, to name a few.
Ever involved, the couple has most recently included the Gibsons Public Market to their interests, supporting this important emerging community hub and marine education centre on the Sunshine Coast.
The Welches have been honoured with various awards bestowed to recognize a life dedicated to both business and community service.
