Going the extra mile: Michelle Catroppa
Michelle has a deep passion for the arts, believing strongly in their ability to enrich our communities and foster creativity and cultural expression. She contributes monthly to one of SFU’s performing arts programs to help ensure it remains strong and accessible for future students.
Why do you support SFU?
I support SFU because it was here that I truly learned the importance of philanthropy in higher education. During my time employed at SFU, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that arise when programs face funding shortages. I believe that philanthropy can be the critical factor that keeps a program alive or enables a student to pursue an education they might otherwise be unable to afford. Supporting SFU allows me to help bridge that gap and ensure opportunities remain accessible.
Why do you believe it is important to support SFU and, more broadly, higher education in Canada?
I believe supporting SFU, and higher education in Canada, is essential because education should not only be accessible but also diverse and robust. Ensuring that all areas of study (arts, sciences, business, etc.) receive adequate funding is critical to providing a high-quality educational experience. When we invest in education, we invest in innovation, creativity, and the future of our society.
What would you say to encourage your SFU colleagues to give back?
I would encourage my colleagues to reflect on the importance of funding, especially in these challenging times. Consider the programs that are most at risk of being cut and think about what resonates with you personally; whether it’s the arts, sciences, or another area. Even a small contribution can have a meaningful impact.
