Going the extra mile: Chingtai Wong
As a dedicated monthly donor, SFU staff member Chingtai Wong has directed his giving toward student well-being and supporting undergraduate students in computing science—the department he first joined as a computer systems administrator when he arrived in Canada more than 25 years ago.
Why do you support SFU?
SFU has been my professional home since I immigrated to Canada in 1999. As a computer systems administrator for SFU’s School of Computing Science and now the Faculty of Applied Sciences, I’ve witnessed firsthand the university's commitment to excellence and innovation. SFU has provided me with a sense of belonging and purpose, and I am proud to contribute to its growth and success. My support, both as a staff member and a donor, is driven by my belief in the transformative power of higher education and my desire to help SFU continue to thrive and make a positive impact on the world.
What specifically motivated you to support SFU?
My motivation to support SFU is deeply rooted in my long-standing connection with the university. Aside from having worked here for more than two decades, my personal project "Humans of SFU”—inspired by Humans of New York—has further fueled my passion for engaging with and supporting the SFU community. With a passion for photography, I have volunteered my time to capture memorable moments at various SFU-related events, especially charity events. This involvement has given me a unique perspective on the university's dedication to its mission and the significant impact that support can have. Seeing the enthusiasm and gratitude of students and faculty at these events has been incredibly rewarding and has reinforced my commitment to supporting SFU.
What impact of your support have you seen at the university? What would you like to see?
My contributions, although modest, help foster a collaborative and inclusive environment. My engagement through "Humans of SFU" extends beyond my professional role, as I actively participate in events outside of work, further reinforcing my connection to the university. This has provided a unique perspective on the university's purpose and the tangible difference that support can make. I would like to see SFU continue to expand its outreach and engagement efforts, ensuring that it remains a leader in higher education and a beacon of opportunity for future generations.
