Celebrating Philanthropy Day with thanks

National Philanthropy Day originated in the 1980s as a day to celebrate charitable activities. By 1986, the United States officially proclaimed November 15 as National Philanthropy Day and since then communities across the globe have celebrated the value of giving.

Here at SFU, philanthropy is critical to our mission and we’re proud to use National Philanthropy day to acknowledge our generous supporters. Today, the role of the world’s great public research universities has never been more important, and as Canada’s leading comprehensive university, SFU is uniquely positioned to leverage its significant research pursuits to bring all facets of society together to help improve our world.

Thanks to our amazing benefactors, SFU is advancing research and making strong community connections to address some of society’s greatest challenges. From supporting our students through scholarships and bursaries to enhancing the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of communities both locally and globally, SFU contributors are making a huge difference in the lives of others.

  • SFU provides nearly 6,000 donor-funded student awards to provide much needed support for our future alumni and next generation of leaders. That’s more than $5 million disbursed to SFU students.
  • Last year alone, SFU supporters donated over $43 million to the university—that’s over 20,000 gifts that have made an impact.
  • Over 2,000 loyal donors have supported SFU for more than 10 years.
  • SFU’s philanthropic partners have contributed to several key initiatives, including attracting more women to STEM programs, enabling new Canadians to gain economic self-sufficiency, fostering Indigenous cultural awareness, strengthening social infrastructure development, and advancing emissions reduction and climate change policy.
  • In 2018/19, nearly 4,500 people made a donation to SFU, including 844 new donors.

As SFU celebrates National Philanthropy Day, we say thank you to our remarkable supporters who donate financially, contribute in-kind gifts to the university and volunteer their time to benefit others.

When working together in partnership, these altruistic commitments will indeed help change our world for the better.
