Every student has a story

Brian and son, Vincent, in the Firefighters lab at SFU's Surrey campus.

Meet Brian and Janis. They attended SFU generations apart, but each shared the same unique struggle.

On her own with two young sons, Janis Horne worked and studied at SFU. It was a tough balancing act, her days were long and exhausting, but she persevered and graduated in 1988 with her first degree.

Those difficult years stuck with Janis. So much so that when her mom passed away, as a tribute, she and her dad made a gift to SFU to create a bursary for single parents. The Horne Family Bursary Endowment now supports 10 single parent students each year, but with 30,000 students at SFU, there are still many more who aren't able to access help.

Brian Misera was a struggling single dad when he received support through the Horne Family Bursary last year. Overwhelmed with gratitude, he wrote a heartfelt letter addressed to Janis and all the other alumni donors who have contributed to the fund:

"I'm so thankful for the bursary I received. A lot of stress has been alleviated, which has allowed me to cherish the time I have with my son, Vincent. With your support, I was able to buy Vincent a winter jacket, gloves and toque. Money has been very tight, but now I'm able to do more financially. It's a nice change of pace.

This time in my life has been full of great moments, but it's also been very challenging. In so many ways, SFU has been there for me. It means a lot.

I plan to join the military once I'm finished my degree. My goal is to use my business knowledge and military experience to transition into politics so I can improve the lives of everyone in Canada and around the world. It's a lofty goal, but I feel very passionate. I want to be an active agent for positive change, and I believe this path is the best way to do that.

It's hard for me to fully convey the depth of my gratitude. The first six weeks I was back at school were rough because I hadn't been a student in four or five years. You've helped give me breathing room, so I can focus solely on my studies and my son. Thank you. Thank you so very much."

Every student has a story, and as we take the time to hear their stories, we discover many are in need of your help. Your support goes way beyond financial aid - you really make a meaningful impact in their lives. Please consider donating to the Horne Family Bursary Endowment Fund today.
