Faculty of Environment

The Faculty of Environment is one of only four interdisciplinary faculties of environment in Canada and the only one in Western Canada. We're a hybrid faculty housing three academic departments: archaeology, geography and resource and environmental management and several academic and non-credit programs including environmental science, ecological restoration (SFU/BCIT) and sustainable development programming.

Some of our guiding values include:

  • Focusing on a realistic but positive vision of a sustainable world;
  • Understanding that "environment" includes diverse processes across both natural landscapes and sustainable human settlements;
  • Incorporating indigenization and community engagement as well as social justice and equity in all that we do.

According to the 2016 QS World University Rankings, two of our departments - archaeology and geography - are in the top 10 among Canadian universities and top 25% of departments in their subject areas worldwide. The department of archaeology ranks fourth in Canada and arguably sits among the top 15 departments for archaeological research on a global scale.
