Accessible arts programming in the heart of the city
An iconic building stands in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada. Open its doors and you’ll discover a space bursting with creativity, imagination and courage. What is this place?
SFU Woodward’s (SFUW) is a 120,000 square-foot artistic hub with state-of-the-art studios, a concert hall and theatre space. People from all walks of life are welcome here to participate in and enjoy great performances in theatre, dance, cinema, music and media arts.
Recently, Frances and Samuel Belzberg generously donated $1 million, so SFUW can continue to develop and sustain partnerships with local and international organizations to provide a full calendar of affordable cultural programming for the community.
Here’s a snapshot of SFUW’s partnerships:
Talking Stick Indigenous Artists Series
For more than 20 years, Vancouver’s Talking Stick Festival has had an incredibly positive impact on the development of Aboriginal performance in Canada. SFUW proudly partners with the festival to share dialogue, outreach, works-in-progress and presentations that advance key cultural initiatives and reframe perceptions of First Nations issues in Canada. SFUW also supports cultural production training opportunities through an innovative Aboriginal internship program.
Based out of Strathcona Community Centre, Project Limelight is a non-profit that connects young kids from the Downtown Eastside with the performing arts. SFUW brings their work to life by providing access to the Fei and Milton Wong Theatre with a full tech team that includes SFU students working alongside the young performers.
Woodward’s Community Singers
The Woodward’s Community Singers operates as a free, weekly drop-in community choir open to all members of the public regardless of vocal experience. They sing music from gospel, folk, popular and contemporary traditions. It’s informal, fun, playful and profound.
Vancouver International Film Festival
SFUW is one of the main event venues for the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). It’s among the five largest film festivals in North America and includes the pick of the world’s top film fests and many undiscovered gems. Attracting a large and enthusiastic audience, the festival remains accessible, friendly and culturally diverse.
